HISTORY OF SOBEYS

In 1907, Sobeys was founded by John W. Sobey in Stellarton, Nova Scotia as a meat delivery business. In 1924, 16 year old Frank H. Sobey convinced his father to expand into a full grocery business. From that day till his death, Frank was the driving force behind the business.

In 1939, After 15 years, the sobeys started its own chain of stores in Pictou county and surrounding counties.
In 1987, Sobeys achieves its first sales of over $1 billion. This same year, Sobeys opens its first store outside of Atlantic Canada in Guelph, Ontario.

In 1998, Sobeys triples its size and becomes a national company when it acquires The Oshawa Group - a Toronto-based supplier to Canada's IGA stores.

In 2005, With the introduction of the exclusive Compliments private label offering, Sobeys inspires Canadians with the best combination of quality, price and exceptional food experience. Today the line has grown to include more than 3,800 products.

In 2006,the slogan “Just add Sobeys” was introduced to emphasize Sobeys commitment to food and customer service.

In 2007, Happy 100th birthday Sobeys! It’s a year of new milestones for Sobeys. The company marks its 100th anniversary and in June is taken private by majority shareholder Empire Company Limited.

In September, Sobeys expands its presence in British Columbia through the acquisition of Thrifty Foods.

In 2008, With the launch of the Club Sobeys and Club Sobeys MasterCard in its Sobeys banner stores in Ontario and Western Canada, Sobeys makes grocery shopping even more rewarding for customers,

In 2010, Sobeys redefines discount food retailing with the launch of the FreshCo discount food banner in Ontario.

Today, Sobeys Inc. is now a $16 billion company with more than 1,500 corporate and franchised stores across the country.

Since the 2005 launch of Compliments, Sobeys Inc.'s private label offering, we've been inspiring Canadians every day with better food choices by ensuring that Compliments represents the best combination of quality, price and selection.

Before a Compliments item makes it into our customers' carts, it has gone through a rigorous testing process to make sure it's the best it can be. Once it leaves the hands of our passionate and knowledgeable team of product developers, we hand over our food ideas to the true experts — our customers. The Compliments Consumer Taste Panel is made up of a rotating group of panelists who assess how every new Compliments product meets the Compliments brand quality criteria. Using their feedback, we determine whether an item is ready for store shelves or needs further testing and improvement until it's perfect. That's the Compliments difference.
